Plot

1949, Santa Rosa, California. A laconic, chain-smoking barber with fallen arches tells a story of a man trying to escape a humdrum life. It's a tale of suspected adultery, blackmail, foul play, death, Sacramento city slickers, racial slurs, invented war heroics, shaved legs, a gamine piano player, aliens, and Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. Ed Crane cuts hair in his in-law's shop, his wife drinks and may be having an affair with her boss, Big Dave, who has $10,000 to invest in a second department store. Ed gets wind of a chance make money in dry cleaning. Blackmail and investment are his opportunity to be more than a man no one notices. Settle in the chair and listen.

Comments

Superbly done faux film noir in black and white. SPOILERS - Something about the trailers for "The Man Who Wasn't There" made me want to see it as soon as it came out on DVD. So I rented it yesterday upon first release. I enjoyed the first half of the movie a lot more than the second half. The B&,W filming gives it a great atmosphere, and BB Thornton plays Ed, the barber of few words, just perfectly. In fact, BB "is" this movie. I believe he will be remembered as one of the fine actors of our time. Many popular actors, like Travolta, Denzel, and Hanks, are really just different faces of themselves, there is a sameness about all their performances. But not Billy Bob. Take 4 films, for example -- this one, "Sling Blade", "Pushing Tin", and "A Simple Plan."All different roles, almost different people playing them, but all BB. But I digress. This film is a tribute, and a spoof of, the 1940s "film noir" genre. Set after the WWII, in 1949, Ed goes through life almost as a "man who wasn't there." He sees an opportunity to invest in the leading edge of new technology, "dry cleaning", but has to blackmail his wife's boss and lover to get the $10,000. Boss finds out, confronts him, is beating Ed, when a quick jab into the neck severs the artery. Ed's wife, who had cooked the books for her boss, gets arrested for the murder. Wife hangs herself in prison, but later Ed gets accused of the dry cleaning investor's murder, he gets an incompetent lawyer, who plea-bargains "guilty" and Ed goes to the electric chair. The story is not so important. Anything could have happened to still make the point of the film. Ed was a man who wasn't really there, even in his own life, and the big things that could have gotten him, didn't, but he met his demise for something he didn't do. That's the irony, the spoof. The film is most enjoyable for the masterful cinematography and the sound editing. Regardless of where the story was going, I was just caught up in the atmosphere of this film. The DVD sound and picture are crisp. But the DVD itself is rather disappointing. The extras are not particularly interesting, and they are not entertaining. Especially the commentary track which does nothing to address the filmmakers' intent during key scenes. They don't seem to identify at all with what we viewers might be curious about. Instead they talk here and there about what they found interesting. Still, for someone who likes somewhat offbeat films, and this genre, it is a good movie.
