Hanks stars as Chuck Noland, a FedEx systems engineer whose personal and professional life are ruled by the clock. His fast-paced career takes him, often at a moment's notice, to far-flung locales - and away from his girlfriend Kelly, played by Helen Hunt. Chuck's manic existence abruptly ends when, after a plane crash, he becomes isolated on a remote island - cast away into the most desolate environment imaginable. Stripped of the conveniences of everyday life, he first must meet the basic needs of survival, including water, food and shelter. Chuck, the consummate problem solver, eventually figures out how to sustain himself physically. But then what? Chuck begins his true personal journey. After four years, fate gives Chuck a chance to fight his way back to civilization, only to find an unexpected emotional challenge greater than all the earlier physical ones. His ability to persevere and to hope are a product of his life-changing experience.

This Ain't no Gilligan! [CONTAINS SPOILERS] Meet Chuck Nolan, FedEx executive. He always by-the-book and determined to get his company to deliver on time. He's also got a fianceé, Kelly Frears, so life was going good. Then one night, right before Christmas, Chuck had to fly to Malaysia. He promised Kelly he'd be right back. Up in the sky, the plane ran into turbulance due to a bad storm. Before long, the plane crashed into the sea. Chuck survived luckily and wound up on a deserted island. The pilot had died in the crash so Chuck was all alone. Some boxes from the plane washed up on land. They were packages that would never be delivered: videotapes, clothes, a volley ball. Chuck used an ice skate to get rid of a tooth that bothered him. Chuck learned that coconut milk was a natural laxative, one thing Gilligan never taught us. He hurt his hands trying to make fire, but finally succeeded. He named the volley ball Wilson and made a face on it: he added two eyes and a mouth to the bloody handprint of his already on it. Four years have gone by. Chuck had grown accustomed to life on the island. He could spear a fish from a mile away, but Chuck did not intend to spend the rest of his life on the island, so he began to build a raft while Wilson looked on. The tape from the videotapes came in handy and soon his craft was ready so he braved the monstrous waves and made it out to sea. He loses Wilson in the process. Well before long Chuck is rescued and wants to go back to his normal life, only he finds Kelly has moved on and gotten a new beau. So Chuck goes on to deliver a box he never opened: one with wings on it. So the movie ends with unanswered questions: what was in that box and why did he not open it? A pretty good movie, though tragic. Tom Hanks was good, as usual. Wilson the volley ball became a popular merchandise item. For this movie, Hanks received an Academy Award® nomination. So what else is new? Ha ha. If you're a Tom Hanks fan, I also recommend: Big, Forrest Gump, Turner &, Hooch, The Green Mile, Dragnet and A League of Their Own. So if you're a Hanks fan, check out Cast Away, although it is a tragic film. Was directed by Robert Zemeckis, who also directed Hanks in Forrest Gump. -
