Plot

A world-weary yakuza in Tokyo is assigned to take his clan to Okinawa to help settle a dispute between two factions. He's suspicious of the assignment, but he goes, and within a couple days, his role remains unclear and several of men are dead. He retreats to a house on a remote beach to wait. The first night there , he rescues a young woman from an assault, and they develop a playful relationship. Over time, it becomes clear he's been set up, sent to Okinawa so that others can take over his lucrative territory. As his clan dwindles, he plans a revenge. But, what if he's successful? What is there to life anyway?

Comments

Strange and attractive This movie is strange and disturbingly fascinating. Many rules of cinematography are disregarded and combine to form the Kitano brand: Endless, slow parallel pans. Constantly filming away from whoever is speaking. Initiating an action and then abruptly cutting and move to an entirely different scene. Whether or not the yakuza portrayed in the movie are realistic or not, or even if the acting doesn't quite meet my expectations, I still think this is an interesting movie, simply because it is novel if not bold in its disregard for rules. Oh, I loved the scene where they played cardboard sumo in the house but even more so the remark the local yakuza leader makes when he baths that the two youngsters could wait for it to begin to rain. A good deal into the movie it suddenly begins to rain and they hurry off to shower only to find themselves completely soaped up when it stops again.
