Plot

Middle-aged novelist Humbert Humbert rents a room in Charlotte Haze's house after he falls passionately in love with her daughter Lolita. There are three slight problems, though - one, Charlotte is madly in love with him (unrequited, needless to say), two, Lolita is only fourteen, three, there's a very peculiar figure by the name of Clare Quilty who keeps popping up in the most unexpected places (and sporting equally unexpected accents), who seems to have a similarly unhealthy interest in Lolita...

Comments

Love and obsession, Kubric style This is among Stanley Kubric's most underrated movies. While movie goers are more hung up on his more visually striking films such as 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, SPARTACUS, and THE SHINING, LOLITA (and others such as THE KILLING, PATHS OF GLORY, and KILLER'S KISS) is a film that relies on the heavy performances of the actors more than eye candy. James Mason lands a tour de force role as Humbert, the English pro- fessor who marries Charlotte (Shelly Winters) just to get close to her budding fox of a daughter named Lolita (Sue Lyon). Trouble abounds when Charlotte starts to put the moves on Humbert while another man, a rake named Quilty (Peter Sellers doing a great non PINK PANTHER role) starts to have unhealthy intentions on young Lolita himself. Great portrayals, especially by Mason and Lyon, help make the movie interesting and involving despite a near 2-hour run.
