A small and insignificant bookkeeper, Kleinman, is awoken one night by his neighbours who wants him to help them track down a strangler who has been killing people all over town. The citizens form vigilance committees, but when Kleinman has dressed, his neighbours have disappeared. Meanwhile a circus has come to town. Irmy and Paul are two of the artists. After a fight, Irmy leaves the circus in the middle of the night. Eventually she meets Kleinman, scared and alone.

As cinema of the surreal, its perfection. Woody Allen's Kleinman is the one island of reasonin this unnamed nighttime city, pleading forcooperation amongst the members of the lynchmob outto get a vicious killer.Without any explanations, they can't even agree on how to do that, and theybreak off into separate factions, with intramuralanger that grows and festers throughout their longnight, even to the point of overshadowing theirgoal.Woody actually makes this process an exercisein hilarity, a tribute to his genius. It's filmsurrealism with a point, to let us relish unrealityby letting there be just enough reality to get afingerhold, before we slide back into deliciousabsurdity. The concept of using nearly-miscastactors in near-cameo roles is part of that premise. This is a great film (for me, it's a 10), andrecommended to all who do not require pat answersand ongoing explanations.
