Plot

Sir James Bond is enjoying his retirement when four international agents press him into service again in hopes of smashing SMERSH and Topple LeChiffre at the baccarat tables. Bond is taken in by Agent Mimi (alias Lady Fiona McTarry) who immediately falls in love with him. Bond's illegitimate daughter, Mata Bond, whose mother was the late Mata Hari, is going to help out. The current agent using the Bond name, Cooper, has his hands full, despite his assistance by beautiful secretary, Moneypenny. 007's nephew Jimmy Bond is supposedly incompetent. Bond, hoping to clear his name from its current low repute, hires Evelyn Tremble to meet LeChiffre at the gambling tables at Casino Royale. The world's richest agent, Vesper Lynd, helps convince Tremble to masquerade as 007.

Comments

This failed where Austin Powers succeeded. Maybe this movie shows why a certain distance in time is needed before one can understand, let alone spoof, an era. Casino Royale had numerous directors, tons of talent, great music, beautiful women, and it utterly failed in spoofing the James Bond genre. One of the reasons can only be that the filmmakers didn't understand some of the things that were funny about the sixties--the ridiculous clothing, the pompous chic radicals, the silly vernacular, and of course, the drugs and shagging. The plot is indecipherable, though it seems to have something to do with an evil organization trying to take over the world.James Bond (David Niven) is now retired but his skills are needed to combat the menace, the British intelligence (loosely used, there is very little intelligence in any part of this movie) trains a new James Bond (the movie is lousy with James Bonds, course it'd be lousy without them too) to help out. Other than that don't expect to understand much, this is one of those movies that really rather exemplifies the sixties' fondness for confusion and chaos rather than spoofs it.Look for Jacqueline Bisset in an early brief role as "Miss Goodthighs".The only really funny part of the movie is provided by Woody Allen as Jimmy Bond, though Deborah Kerr is pretty darn funny as a Scottish widow with a gaggle of gorgeous and nubile daughters. The ending is catastrophically ridiculous, think of an episode of the old Batman series on a huge budget. The theme song is a great combination of Herb Alpert and Burt Bacharach, and the "Look of Love" is one of the decades best songs, so there's that. This movie might be worth watching, if only because of the spectacular silliness of it all, but it goes on forever, it's far far too long. The movie did use up one of Ian Flemmings titles so the real James Bond movies didn't use it--they just started making up their own after his ran out. If you have absolutely nothing else to do, this might be worth a smile or two, but it might be better on video tape so you can fast forward though great swaths of it.
