Plot

This playful film is at once a documentary of a day in the life of the Soviet Union, a documentary of the filming of said documentary, and a depiction of an audience watching the film. Even the editing of the film is documented. We often see the cameraman who is purportedly making the film, but we rarely, if ever, see any of the footage he seems to be in the act of shooting!

Comments

Troubling, but exhilirating More propagandist than its supporters sometimes allow, this is still one of the greatest pleasures in the whole of cinema. If you don't think about the sinister organising force of the film's incessant patterning and connecting, the film is a feast of enjoyment and possibility - a poem of beautiful imagery, gobsmackingly inventive montage, a hymn to artifice and the potentialities of the medium. The film is lighthearted and frequently comic in its depiction of the day in the life of a city.Just don't try to remember that it is also an act of Stalinist centralisation that cares more about machines than people.
