Comments

A wonderful beginning, a great ending, but a mediocre film between them "The Million Dollar Hotel" starts so wonderful that I just said to myself: how great this movie is going to be and how wrong the critics were! But... Sweet hope. The film drowned itself or just jumped from the top of the hotel together with the character. And, taking the last 10 or 20 minutes, this is not worthy of your money and time. What a great premise! What a great director! Good actors. But the wrong writer. For me, the big fault of the film is Bono. The idea was... beautiful- show a modern fairy tale, as director Wim Wenders himself said. But why go round and round and round and...? Why so many disposable, bland, pathetic characters? What is Gloria Stuart doing there? Why so many shameful, pointless, disposable scenes? What was the reason to show Mel Gibson's disgusting scars on his back? Just to shock? Why showing Milla Jovovich and Jeremy Davies kissing themselves that way? They are retarded, or pretend to be, but so what? These are questions I would like to ask to someone involved in this film. And the fault of all this may also be of Wim Wenders. People say he is not the same of "Wings of Desire", even after the critically acclaimed "Buena Vista Social Club". Why accept a screenplay written by Bono? Why? I think the cast did what they could do. Mel Gibson, Jeremy Davies and even Milla Jovovich had good performances. But they are lost in the middle of a not very nice eccentricity. We saw how fun and entertaining eccentricity can be with "Being John Malkovich" and "Magnolia". But here it doesn't work very much. The film editing, which was interesting at the beginning, started to piss me off at some point. And, trying to be original, unusual and creative, "The Million Dollar Hotel" fell on its own traps. It became a cliched movie, with the native American, the hippie guy, the addicted girl, everyone there. And quite mediocre, it has to be said. Also superficial, because if it wanted to talk about the reality we can't see, it should have gone deeper. And then some people say "American Beauty" is hollow... But there's the end, which shows how beautiful the movie is indeed, or could have been, but it's far too late. We couldn't engage with the story, nor with the characters. What the movie has to say is on the last 20 minutes, and they are really good. Because of this irregularity, it's rather difficult to rate "The Million Dollar Hotel". I would give a 9/10 or even a 10/10 for the beginning, a 4/10 for the middle and a 8/10 for the last 20 minutes. But I have to rate it, so my final vote is: 6/10 -- Do me a favor. Watch this on video and skip some parts of the middle. They're not very important to you.
