Thomas Jerome Newton is a humanoid alien who comes to Earth to get water for his dying planet. He starts a high technology company to get the billions of dollars he needs to build a return spacecraft, and meets Mary-Lou, a girl who falls in love with him. He does not count on the greed and ruthlessness of business here on Earth, however.

READ THE BOOK I have a loathing for Bowie, as my younger brother can well testify. However I like Roeg's work, and had enjoyed the novel. Whenever you've read the book, the film (however good or bad) always seems a disappointment. You've already invested a lot of time and faith in the characters. Although they've made Mary-Lou a little too glamorous, I have no real other complaints. I think it gives a little too much away too early on, but other than than it's not bad. And Bowie is perfect for the role. Perhaps that's it, he's not human.
