Plot

Catherine, a rich woman of brittany, engage Sophie as maid for her great house. Sophie is illiterate but nobody know it, and she've shame of it. She become friend with Sophie, the post office employee, a woman not very sane, jalous about Catherine and her husband Georges. Sophie, a quiet and shy maid working for the upper-class family Lelievre, hides her illiteracy under the cloak of a perfect household and obedience. She finds a friend in the energetic and uncompromising postmaster Jeanne, who encourages her to stand up against her bourgeois employers. Things start to escalate as the Lelievres find out that Sophie can't read and has brought Jeanne into their house against their wish.

Engaging and intriguing A wealthy family hire a quiet maid sophie who never really fits in with the household she is clumsy at first and tries the patience of the man of the house his wife played by jacqueline bisset is more understanding and gives her a chance then sophie meets the towns post office clerk jeanne who is coarse and a rebel and dislikes the family she starts to have an effect on sophie with her ideas and ways influencing her,her duty as the maid starts to deteriorate and she starts to become like jeanne being rude and stubborn it is like a timebomb that has to go off the tension in the house becoming unbearable and the conclusion is shocking,it is engaging with good acting all round and a film that holds your attention.
