Starship Troopers 2 is an indirect sequel to the original Starship Troopers that went straight to video. Had it not featured the same bugs and the same helmets from the first Starship Troopers, you wouldn't be able to tell that this was even in the same universe. The focus of the movie was on a single event, that showed a sort of evolution of the war between the bugs and humans in the Starship Troopers universe. The particular event showed its significance because the bugs the humans were fighting against were using smaller bugs that took control of humans, inhabiting their brain, being able to spread like a virus from one to the other until there are no more humans left.

Some of the reviewers would have you think that this movie is "totally low-budget", but it is surprisingly good in some specific areas, particularly the CGI effects.Just a few seconds of the CGI would probably have paid for much better weapons, which are, indeed, unbelievably cheesy. Overall, I have to dock it points for a stupid story, bad acting and script, lousy weapons, and for casting Brenda Strong as Sgt. Rake after she was cast (and died) as Captain Deladier in the first "Starship Troopers" movie. I will give it some points, though, for good bugs, good oral and anatomically correct CGI effects, and the guts to kill off whoever it feels like. I guess I also have to deduct points for the producer and director making some heavy-handed comments about the war in Iraq.Obviously, nobody who worked on this move ever bothered to read the original novel and had no understanding of the subtleties of the first movie.
